Reflections

God's Plan is God's Grace to us

In today's Gospel, we hear Jesus teach about faith and service to God. The context is a continuing dialogue between Jesus and his followers about what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. Jesus has just finished an instruction on sin and forgiveness. There are two related teachings that Jesus offers to his disciples when they cry out for an increase in faith. The first is the familiar reminder that faith, even just a little, will enable the followers of Jesus to do wondrous things. But this uplifting and inspiring teaching is quickly followed by the second teaching, a caution about knowing one's place in God's plans. The disciples of Jesus are to understand themselves as servants to God and his plans. Even when God works wonders through us, with our mustard seed-sized faith, we must not seek praise. Our participation in God's plans is God's grace to us—nothing more, nothing less. When we are graced enough to cooperate with God, the work we do is nothing more than our obligation to God as faithful stewards. And yet, our faith enables us to believe that what we have offered in service to God, as his servants, can be made to produce a hundredfold.

Lonsdale at 25th

Parking available at Holy Trinity Church’s gravel lot just west of Lonsdale and 27th

Signs can be picked up beginning at 1:30 on the grassy area at the northeast corner of Lonsdale and 25th Street.

1:45   Final instructions on the grassy area.

2:00 -3:00 Life Chain.

Beginning 3:15   Celebrate in the Holy Trinity Church Hall at Lonsdale and 27th.

HOW TO HAVE A GREAT LIFE CHAIN

1. The weather is forecast to be sunny on Sunday, but the Life Chain will go on rain or shine. So dress for the weather.

2. Stand on the sidewalk, spaced 8 feet apart. This is so we don’t block other’s signs.

3. Hold your sign facing on-coming traffic.

4. Hold your sign still so that it can be read.

5. Avoid casual talk with other sign-holders; but feel free to wave to those who honk as they pass.

6. Pray silently for those driving past that our message will have a positive impact on them.

7. Remember to SMILE.

8. Refer any media or police or passersby who want to debate or get more information to North Vancouver Life Chain coordinator Len Corben (he’ll be the one wearing a Blue Jays cap). Do not debate with anyone.

9. At 3:00 p.m., please return your signs and flags to your Point Person who will take them back to Len Corben on the grassy northeast corner of 25th Street.

10. When the event is over, please celebrate afterwards with everyone else at the Holy Trinity Church Hall where the North Shore Pro-Life organization will host us with coffee and snacks. This will give you a chance to meet up with people you know, people you don’t know and people you have just met.
